Elliston Campground

The District Council of Elliston

The District Council of Elliston is located on the west coast of Eyre Peninsula and their economy is heavily reliant on agriculture and the ups and downs of this industry. The Council recognised the need to diversify and resolve to encourage tourism by promoting the spectacular natural beauty of the District.

It was decided to focus on the increased number of RV’s, caravans and campers travelling around the Eyre Peninsula by improving camping opportunities.

Along the 120 kilometres of coastline the Council has two main camping grounds, Walker’s Rock and Sheringa Beach. Each location is extremely popular with locals and tourists and the Council has concentrated on upgrading both sites.

Both Sheringa Beach and Walker’s Rock camping grounds now have new toilets and outdoor showers, operating with solar power and rainwater. Landscaping works are being undertaken and signage is being installed. Additional camping sites were identified and the entrances upgraded.

The Council has liaised with Natural Resources Eyre Peninsula and the Coast Board keeping impact on vegetation to a minimum.

Daily visits to the sites by staff ensure clean facilities and removal of rubbish and allow monitoring of visitors to ensure the comfort of all.

The camping fees are $10 per night per vehicle and the number of vehicles enjoying the camping grounds has increased significantly since the upgrade.

The Council has received numerous positive comments from campers, confirming that the upgrades have been a great success.

The Eyes on Eyre Project, a collaboration between Councils on the Eyre Peninsula and Regional Development Australia Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula is using the Walker’s Rock and Sheringa Beach camping grounds as a model for other sites included in the Project.
